Carlos Corberan best pound-for-pound Championship manager as West Brom clash v QPR predicted
Carlos Corberan has been branded the “best pound-for-pound operator” in the Championship as West Brom prepare to open their season at QPR.
Sky Sports journalist Lewis Jones made the call on Wednesday morning [7 August] whilst predicting the Baggies would be beaten by a single goal at Loftus Road on Saturday due to their suspect away form.
Corberan takes his Albion side to West London to raise the curtain on their 2024-25 campaign, having missed out on promotion via the play-offs last season.
Jones said: “Carlos Corberan does remain – arguably the best pound-for-pound operator in the division.
“But away from home West Brom struggled last season, winning just two of their last 13 away games and 14 teams picked up more points away from home last season than the Baggies despite a top-six finish.
“West Brom are one of many teams in a state of flux in terms of recruitment having lost some key figures in Cedric Kipre, Okay Yokuslu, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Conor Townsend.”
West Brom face squad challenge for QPR clash
West Brom have been predicted by Opta’s supercomputer this week to finish fourth in the Championship this season.
This is an interesting curveball into the worries which have plagued the Albion fanbase throughout the summer, alongside Corberan himself who recognises the challenge he faces.
The Spaniard has seen the levels of experience in his squad dwindle and some of his key marksmen leave the club, some of them taking until deep into the transfer window to exit The Hawthorns – Kipre as a free agent being a case in point.

But despite the heavy losses in his squad and the club’s failure to secure some of its targets, Corberan’s pragmatism as a coach will no doubt be an attribute his squad and fanbase rely on as they head down to the capital in hope of snatching all three points from an unpredictable QPR outfit.
Further recruits are likely to be brought in to give the pool of players a much-needed bulk, but Albion will be needing the same kind of reliability – particularly in defence – which steered them to the play-offs last season.
In other West Brom news, FA-charged Jayson Molumby is set to be the latest name to depart.
