Kieran Maguire shares what club executive tells him about West Brom PSR situation with EFL

Kieran Maguire has been told by a club executive that the EFL is working with West Brom to help achieve financial compliance.

The Baggies have reported been placed under a business plan given that a PSR breach is currently likely at the Hawthorns [Rob Dorsett], something which Maguire now says is an “informal” plan.

Speaking out on the EFL’s support, the football finance expert shared what he has learned from a club executive on The Price of Football podcast on 8 August.

He said: “I contacted an executive at a club to say what’s the score? What’s going on here?

“Their reply to me was, the reason that West Brom are in the current position, in their opinion, was that as well as looking at the accounts which are looking in the rearview mirror. They’re saying what did you do in 2023 and 2024? While we’re moving into 2025.

“The EFL ask clubs to submit future financial information, i.e. effective budgets in terms of what they think their expected PSR position would be by the time that the 2024 accounts are submitted.

“Now, if it is likely that there could be a breach, what the EFL would normally do is they would agree to an informal business plan with the club and try to concentrate on saying yes or no to deal to ensure they have compliance.”

West Brom receive support from EFL

The Baggies have been working with the league organisers for over a year due to issues under the previous ownership regime.

There is no current risk of the club missing payment Shilen Patel but finances aren’t completely without problems.

This won’t come as a surprise to supporters who have become accustomed to issues with PSR at the Hawthorns in seasons gone by.

There is some positivity surrounding the club under the new owner but he has so much work to do to right the wrongs of previous years.

Some of the positive atmosphere has been dampened by the sale of key players like Okay Yokuslu and Brandon Thomas-Asante.

West Brom midfielder Okay Yokuslu
Okay Yokuslu was a firm fan favourite at West Brom.

Under any other manager, it would all be doom and gloom in the Midlands but with Carlos Corberan there are so many reasons to be upbeat.

The Spaniard will need a miracle to have another season as successful as the last but with the EFL working closely with the Baggies, the situation could improve soon.
