Jayson Molumby slammed as West Brom midfielder receives FA punishment

West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby has been slammed by former referee Noel Egan after the midfielder was punished by the FA.

The ex-FIFA official believes there are no excuses for the 25-year-old’s behaviour during the Baggies’ 1-0 pre-season defeat to Mallorca on Saturday 27 July.

Molumby could be seen striking Samu Costa in the face, which has since led to the FA charging the Republic of Ireland international with violent conduct (via BBC Sport, 2 August).

He has now been handed his punishment after accepting the charge. Molumby has been fined £16,000 and been banned from West Brom’s next five friendly matches (via West Brom, 9 August).

And Egan – speaking exclusively to West Brom News – feels that this is justified.

“It is simple, you don’t get involved in that sort of thing,” Egan said.

“We all know that players get wound up, these things happen. However, you need to teach players that you don’t react to that stuff.

“Players in this day and age should not be striking other players on the pitch, especially not in a pre-season friendly. Period.

“This isn’t a mistimed tackle, that is intent. Therefore, Molumby deserves his punishment, whether it was a pre-season match or not.”

It would have been pretty difficult for Molumby to argue his way out of this one.

It was pretty clear that he had struck Costa in the face. As a result, he was perhaps lucky to get away with such a light punishment.

While the fine will no doubt frustrate him, being forced to sit out of five pre-season matches, rather than five competitive ones, doesn’t seem like much of a punishment.

There is no place for what Molumby did on the football pitch.

And this latest development could perhaps be the beginning of the end for the midfielder at The Hawthorns.
