Carlos Corberan shares brand new West Brom transfer update

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan poured water on the possibility of the Baggies completing any new transfers in the next few days.

Speaking to the Express and Star after the Baggies defeated QPR 3-1 on the opening weekend (10 August), Corberan said that despite having some “ideas” for transfers in recent days, none came to fruition.

Josh Maja’s hat-trick gave the Albion all three points in their first match of the new Championship campaign, in which five new signings made their debuts, with Torbjorn Heggem starting at left-back.

When quizzed on further additions in the coming days, Corberan said: “No, not right now – the team are working on other possibilities.

“We had a couple of ideas, but at the end, the moments didn’t happen.”

West Brom still expected to pursue new transfers this summer

While Albion making a winning start to their Championship campaign may go some way towards masking a transitional summer on the transfer front, Corberan will recognise that there is still work to be done.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s switch to Coventry City leaves a vacancy up front despite Maja’s treble and Devante Cole’s arrival on a free transfer, while there remain gaps to fill in other areas of the team.

West Brom midfielder Okay Yokuslu
Okay Yokuslu was a firm fan favourite at West Brom.

The Baggies’ progress could be slowed by the implementation of a PSR-related business plan by the EFL [Rob Dorsett, 3 August], but fees paid for the likes of Thomas-Asante and Okay Yokuslu should give them some financial leeway.

Yokuslu in particular is someone who must be replaced after his £1.35million move to Trabzonspor, with more than just Ousmane Diakite needed as incoming midfielders.

Diakite replaced Jayson Molumby at Loftus Road, but with Yann M’Vila and Nathaniel Chalobah leaving on free transfers of their own, this is arguably the most pressing area in which the Baggies need to do business.
