Tom Fellows shines with MOTM performance in new role – West Brom player ratings v Leeds United

West Brom secured a point in a goalless draw against Leeds United at The Hawthorns on Saturday (17 August).

The opening 45 minutes saw the Baggies create the better chances but neither side was able to find the breakthrough.

This theme didn’t change in the second half with Jayson Molumby having the best chance after John Swift found him free on the edge of the box.

After a game of few chances, the referee blew for full time at 0-0 with the two sides sharing the points in what is a fair result.

West Brom News rated the players out of 10;

Alex Palmer – 5

The Baggies shot-stopper had very little to do throughout the game. When called upon he was there but Leeds didn’t force him into much activity.

Darnell Furlong – 6

The right-back was constantly getting up the pitch during the first half to get throw-ins away which was looking promising. This slowed in the second half but the 28-year-old was positive defensively up against Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James throughout.

Semi Ajayi – 6

Ajayi was there when Corberan needed him to. A clearance midway through the second half was important to keep the scores level.

Kyle Bartley – 6

The centre half will be disappointed not to have got on the scoresheet in all honesty. The ball bounced off him and wide in the first half before Illan Meslier slapped the ball just away from his head as he charged in from a corner. His near last-ditch tackle on Wilfried Gnonto late on was just what was required.

Torbjoern Heggem – 5

It wasn’t quite the performance that he showed against QPR but the Norweigan was solid once again up against some top-class wingers on the day.

Jayson Molumby – 6

Another player who may have felt as if he should have scored. After Swift teed him up, the Irishman snatched at an effort and hit it straight at the goalkeeper. On another day he picks out the corners and puts the Baggies one up.

Alex Mowatt – 7

A quiet yet astute performance against his former side for Mowatt who milled around the midfield areas and kept the home side ticking over.

John Swift – 7

The 29-year-old was everywhere and had a positive showing going forward and back. He so nearly got an assist for one of his midfield partners but was unfortunate not to. A strong showing against a tough Leeds midfield on the day although his yellow card was a frustrating one to pick up.

Karlan Grant – 5

The forward will be another who will be disappointed not to have scored after being laid up by Molumby after a misplaced Joe Rodon pass.

Tom Fellows – 7

Asked to play a more defensive role on the opposite side to usual by Corberan, but he stepped up to the plate with ease. Combining with his full back at times was able to shut out the opposition wingers throughout.

Josh Maja – 4

After his opening-day heroics, the Leeds clash was a very quiet day for Maja who really failed to get involved up against Rodon and Pascal Struijk. It wasn’t a worry necessarily as chances were few and far between but more may have been expected of the Baggies number nine.
