Carlos Corberan exit decision nailed on after West Brom announcement today
West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has quite clearly signalled his intentions to the club with the appointment of coach Martin Drury from Manchester United.
Corberan revealed earlier this month that he was facing the most difficult challenge of his managerial career [Birmingham Live] at The Hawthorns, which prompted rumours of an impending exit this summer.
That followed on from speculation that he was wanted by both Burnley and Leicester City earlier in the summer.
Now, the Baggies boss has put those rumours to bed with the appointment of Drury – one that he pushed for the club to make ahead of another attempt at Premier League promotion this season.
The appointment was confirmed by Albion on the club’s official website on Thursday (22 August).
Carlos Corberan is not leaving West Brom
West Brom fans can feel relieved the 41-year-old is still at the helm. He was considered for the Leicester City job [John Percy] before Steve Cooper succeeded Enzo Maresca and his side’s performance in the 0-0 draw against Leeds United has led to their supporters calling for Corberan to make a return to Elland Road.
The Baggies have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2024/25 Championship season with a 3-1 win against Queens Park Rangers on the opening day before the draw with Leeds.
Drury, who spent six years at Bradford City before his role in the Man United academy, knows Corberan well from that spell up north as the Baggies boss was in the Elland Road setup at the time.
All talk of an exit from West Brom can be put to bed. Corberan is settled in Birmingham and ready to help the club achieve their goals this season, with another of his allies now part of the staff.
Drury has had experience coaching some of the most promising young talent in the country at Old Trafford and will be looking to make his mark on the current crop at The Hawthorns.
While all eyes are on the summer transfer window and potential new signings such as Uros Racic [westbrom.fc], the importance of a quality backroom staff can never be understated and will help the Baggies achieve the fine margins that will determine their success this term.
In other West Brom news, Man United once tried to sign a West Brom-bound ace who had £92m release clause.
