Carlos Corberan hailed after West Brom 'miracle', best outside Premier League

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman has backed Carlos Corberan to produce another "miracle" and challenge for Premier League promotion with West Brom this season.

Despite limited finances, the Spaniard guided the Baggies to the play-off semi-finals last season in his first full campaign in charge at The Hawthorns.

Albion have had to contend with the loss of a number of players this summer, yet they have started their Championship campaign with seven points from nine.

On that basis, Goodman believes there is a debate to be had as to whether Corberan is the best manager in the English Football League.

"The debate over who is the best manager outside of the Premier League is one that is always wide open because there are so many impressive managers out there," he told West Brom News.

"You could argue a case for Corberan being the best, or argue the case for three or four others. What Corberan did last season was a minor miracle.

"It'll be the same again with various loans and possibly free transfers in order to bring more players in. You wouldn't put it past him doing something similar to last season."

Carlos Corberan can guide West Brom to Premier League

On paper, this West Brom side should not realistically be challenging for promotion to the Premier League.

The same was true last season, though, when many were predicting an upper mid-table finish at best for the Baggies.

Corberan has the ability to get every last ounce out of every one of his players, and they all seem to love working under him.

Supporters had a scare earlier in the summer when Burnley and Leicester City showed an interest in the 41-year-old, but he is at The Hawthorns to stay.

On the basis of the opening few league games this season, there is no reason why West Brom cannot be in the top-six picture once again.

And with no Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United or indeed Southampton, there will be a less daunting route to the Premier League if they do make the play-offs.

Everyone at West Brom is desperate to get back to the Premier League, and in Corberan the club have the perfect manager to help achieve that goal.
