West Brom ready to hijack Mikey Johnston transfer to bring Celtic ace back to Hawthorns

West Brom are ready to step in and hijack Celtic winger Mikey Johnston’s transfer to Sheffield United, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon page on Wednesday (28 August) that the Irish winger’s £2.5million move to Bramall Lane has stalled after the Blades rejected a bid for Gustavo Hamer.

Carlos Corberan’s side may be set to take advantage of these new developments and could secure their former loanee’s services if they can come close to matching United’s offer for his services.

Johnston is understood to have enjoyed his temporary spell at The Hawthorns last season and would be willing to return if the clubs could agree a deal.

Will Mikey Johnston exit Celtic amid West Brom transfer rumours?

You would struggle to find a West Brom supporter who wouldn’t want to see Johnston back in Baggies colours this season, given his exploits whilst on loan at The Hawthorns last season.

The 25-year-old scored an impressive seven goals and laid on two assists in just 20 appearances for Albion last term and played a major role in helping Corberan’s side secure a place in the Championship playoffs.

With Johnston on one wing and Tom Fellows on the other, the Baggies had a partnership that would strike fear into the majority of Championship defences. If that could be recreated, it would massively boost their top-six hopes once again.

The only question around this deal will be whether or not West Brom have the cash available to match or even come close to Sheffield United’s bid without having to sell any players first.

Fellows himself has been the subject of a £10million bid in the last couple of days [John Percy, 27 August] and Albion may well have to decide if it is worth chasing in on one of their young talents if it allows them to secure a deal for Johnston.

It won’t be an easy call to make, but time is running out for the Baggies to make their mind up.
