Don Goodman calls for perspective amid West Brom transfer latest
Don Goodman has put the transfer activity at West Brom this summer in perspective heading into deadline day.
The Baggies have seen a number of big names depart The Hawthorns over the past couple of months, while minimal money has been spent on replacements.
There is still time for that to change, with Mikey Johnston looking set to return to the club after last season’s successful loan spell [TalkWBA, 28 August].
Some supporters are still ultimately disappointed not to have seen more money invested back into the squad, but Goodman was quick to point out how bleak the finances looked under Guochuan Lai.
“The player sales we’ve seen indicate that the finances were never truly in order and they’ve had to first bring money into the football club,” he told West Brom News.
“They now need ratification from the EFL to do any business, which isn’t great. But what I would say, imagine how much worse it would be under the previous ownership regime.”
Mikey Johnston arrival will change mood entirely at West Brom
Thanks to the impressive work of Carlos Corberan, Albion’s fast start to the campaign on the field has helped lift some of the gloom.
However, the Spaniard deserves more backing and it will be a huge boost if Shilen Patel can get a couple more deals over the line.
A move for Will Keane is now off after the striker signed a contract extension at Preston North End on Thursday (29 August).
Failing to bring in another striker could well come back to haunt the Baggies, although Josh Maja’s start to the campaign has papered over the cracks.

Johnston signing is out of the blue and it certainly enhances West Brom’s prospects of earning promotion back to the Premier League.
It has been a rather mixed transfer window in many ways, and only time will tell whether this current squad is stronger or weaker than the one that ended last season.
In other West Brom news, Wrexham are in advanced talks with the Baggies over signing an attacking player.
