Portsmouth make transfer decision on West Brom ace Jed Wallace

Jed Wallace could remain a West Brom player beyond transfer Deadline Day after Portsmouth ended their interest in re-signing him, according to The News.

The Portsmouth daily newspaper reported on 29 August that rumours of Wallace making a return to the club where his career began are “wide of the mark”, with the prospect of the transfer having always looked unlikely.

Promoted Portsmouth are still looking to make additions to their squad before the window closes at 11pm on Friday (30 August), but have prioritised signing a central defender over a potential deal for Wallace.

The 30-year-old’s prospective fee and wages are reportedly beyond the current budget Portsmouth are able to spend, but Wallace could still leave the Hawthorns with a seven-figure switch to Luton mooted [WBA Report, 29 August].

Will West Brom keep Jed Wallace beyond the transfer window?

Despite being the appointed captain of Carlos Corberan’s side since 2023, Wallace is yet to start a match for the Baggies this term owing to the exceptional form of young winger Tom Fellows.

Fellows’ electrifying start to the season means that – barring a big-money move to the Premier League [Nizaar Kinsella, 29 August] – the right-wing spot is his to lose as Albion look to mount a serious promotion push.

Mikey Johnston’s impending return to the club in a £3million transfer from Celtic will likely also see him lock down a spot on the left flank – although Karlan Grant has started the season well in this position.

With a plethora of options at Corberan’s disposal, it’s hard to see exactly where Wallace fits in the starting side, suggesting a move into the number 10 role – or a move elsewhere – is on the cards.

Luton have just a few hours to agree a deal for Wallace before the window shuts, and with Portsmouth reneging on their interest, Albion’s promotion rivals are now in the box seat to sign Corberan’s captain.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies have also been given a boost as they look to keep hold of one of their best young players.
