West Brom fans stunned by shock Birmingham City transfer news – ‘Blimey’
West Brom fans reacted on social media to local rivals Birmingham City potentially spending up to £10million on a new third-tier transfer.
Telegraph journalist John Percy posted on X (30 August) to report that Birmingham, relegated from the Championship to League One last season, have sent a £9–10million bid to Fulham for Jay Stansfield.
The striker spent last season on loan at St. Andrews and scored 13 goals in the second tier, with Percy adding that such a fee for the 21-year-old would break League One’s transfer record “by a distance”.
At The Hawthorns, the most expensive signing of the 2024 summer window is set to be the £3million agreed with Celtic for Mikey Johnston [Lewis Cox, 28 August], and Albion fans reacted to Birmingham spending more than three times that.
West Brom fans react to £10m Birmingham City transfer news
It’s safe to say that circumstances at The Hawthorns this summer would’ve have allowed the Baggies to spend anywhere near £10m on a single player, even if Carlos Corberan had pleaded to the club’s board.
Albion supporters – like those of almost every other club – were shocked at the latest update coming out of Birmingham, with one simply replying “blimey”, to Percy’s report on X.
Questions soon arose over just how the Blues were able to bid such an amount given their status as a third-tier side, with “how are they affording to do this” being one such query from a Baggies fan.
Another echoed this sentiment, saying that Birmingham should be “relegated to League Two”, while other Baggies fans were taken aback by the sheer scale of the fee, asking “What?”
Some supporters, however, were more positive, saying that they were reminded of “Fulham’s rise in the late 90’s”, and that the Blues really were “showing some ambition.”

The financial and PSR queries wouldn’t go away though, with one Albion fan saying that it would be “hilarious” if Birmingham aren’t promoted back to the Championship following their vast spending spree.
Birmingham are certainly looking to make waves in the third tier, but Albion fans will be hoping that come May 2025, they’ll be back in the Premier League before Birmingham can make a return to the second tier.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have been given a boost as they look to keep hold of one of their best young players.
