Carlos Corberan to have words with Jayson Molumby despite West Brom win v Swansea City

Jayson Molumby was vital as West Brom claimed an all-important win against Swansea City at The Hawthorns on Saturday (31 August).

The 25-year-old midfielder scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory, smashing the ball into the bottom corner on the stroke of half-time, which eventually saw three points go to Carlos Corberan’s side.

Despite his impact, several fans were concerned about his over-enthusiastic challenges on the pitch, having picked up a yellow card for a challenge on Matt Grimes after just 10 minutes.

While Molumby is a hugely important player at The Hawthorns, Corberan may need to have a word with him during the international break to make sure his side does not go down to 10 men needlessly.

Red cards are not a regular occurrence for the midfielder, last receiving one in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign, but his three yellow cards in the first four games have come with a new fear.

Jayson Molumby must dial back heavy challenges for West Brom

There is no understating how important Molumby was before being hooked after the hour mark, having completed 90 per cent of his passes, got 100 per cent of his shots on target and made four recoveries [FotMob].

The Republic of Ireland international also successfully completed 100 per cent of his dribbles and 100 per cent of his attempted long balls, also sending his of his passes into the final third.

Without the early yellow card, it could have been a perfect performance from the 25-year-old, but after missing the majority of the 2023/24 campaign, it looks like he’s got the energy to burn.

Corberan can, obviously, harness this for his benefit but he must ensure that some of these reckless challenges do not turn into anything more harmful, affecting the Baggies’ chances of taking home a win.

The team have started the new season brilliantly, even despite all the PSR drama and several stars sold during the summer, so it would be a shame for one player to ruin it with a brainless act like picking up a red card.
