Northern Irish media react to Paddy McNair display as West Brom ace features v Luxembourg

West Brom summer signing Paddy McNair has been hailed by the Northern Irish press after scoring against Luxembourg.

Michael O’Neill’s side began their Nations League campaign with three points, securing a 2-0 win on Thursday 5 September at Windsor Park.

The Baggies star helped his country on the track to a win, scoring after just 11 minutes, poking an effort into the far corner after the ball fell to him on the penalty spot.

The 29-year-old’s performance has been picked out by media in his home country after helping his side to victory for the second time in 17 matches.

Getting on the scoresheet and failing to concede always represents a positive performance for a defender with McNair doing exactly that.

This led the Belfast Telegraph to pick out the former Manchester United man with an 8/10 rating for his performance against Luxembourg.

On his showing, they said: “Fired Northern Ireland ahead for the perfect start after ten minutes.

“Michael O’Neill’s most dependable operator showed his usual composure and organisation against the occasional, half-hearted Luxembourg raid.”

This rating was shared by Belfast Live who were also complimentary about the Baggies man and his nights work.

They said: “Capped a solid performance with the opening goal.”

After a slow start to life at The Hawthorns for the versatile midfield and defender option, this could give him the platform to succeed during his loan spell.

A positive showing for his country may be enough to impress Carlos Corberan and earn more minutes in the Championship moving forward.
