Ireland fans react after what West Brom ace Jayson Molumby did v England – ‘Terrible’

West Brom star Jayson Molumby and his Republic of Ireland team-mates put in a “limited” performance as fans reacted to their 2-0 defeat by England.

Molumby was selected to start for his country for the first time since November 2023 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin [X, 7 September], but proved no match for a dominant England side in the first half.

The Republic’s performance improved in the second half with England already two goals up, and the Albion midfielder received a 64th-minute yellow card for a shirt pull on second goalscorer Jack Grealish.

Declan Rice, a former Irish international himself, had opened the scoring within 11 minutes and teed up Grealish 15 minutes later; proved too much for Molumby or Will Smallbone to handle throughout.

Jayson Molumby not spared as Republic of Ireland fans react

Hosting England in their opening UEFA Nations League Group 2 match was always likely to stir plenty of reaction from Irish fans, but the reception towards Molumby on his return to the national side was mixed.

One fan said on social media that despite Molumby being “technically very poor”, he and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher were the only players to have “earned their corn” in the “brutal” 2-0 defeat.

Another was less sympathetic, saying that Molumby’s foot resembled a 50-pence piece after he had “two terrible attempts at goal”, both of which he should have done much better with.

Further criticism came even before kick-off, with a fan arguing that “there is no way on earth” that the “extremely limited” Molumby should have started ahead of Bristol City’s Jason Knight.

Knight and Molumby were both the subject of another fan’s ire, which stated that none of the Republic’s midfielders are on a par with the likes of Roy Keane, Kevin Kilbane, or England interim coach Lee Carsley.

One Irish West Brom fan’s praise of Molumby’s performance was immediately shot down by another supporter’s reply, saying that Molumby was “as poor as the rest (of the team)”.

However, his mixed afternoon was again shown by a fan who posted in response to winger Chiedozie Ogbene receiving the man-of-the-match award, staying he and Molumby “were the only outfield players who showed up”.

Molumby certainly has his fans and his critics based on his performances for both club and country so far this season, but Carlos Corberan won’t be in a rush to displace him in his Albion side any time soon.
