West Brom set to offer Darnell Furlong new contract after Carlos Corberan comments

West Brom should be making a brand-new contract for Darnell Furlong at The Hawthorns a number one priority.

It has been a brilliant start to the season for the Baggies. Carlos Corberan’s side currently sit second in the EFL Championship after going unbeaten in their first four league matches.

As a result, confidence will be high at The Hawthorns about the prospects of a serious promotion push this season, and one player who will be key to that is right-back Furlong.

The 28-year-old has been a key performer since Corberan arrived at West Brom, and has so far played every minute in the Championship for the Baggies this season.

And based on Corberan’s recent admission, it is clear to see just how highly the West Brom boss rates Furlong.

While speaking via the Express and Star (7 September), the 41-year-old said, “Furlong is a player that personally I love to work with.

“He is a player we need as a club to value a lot because the number of minutes that he plays every season – without decreasing his level – shows that he is a very robust and very mentality strong player.

“With these natural things, he has added attacking and defensive behaviours that have made him for me one of the best full-backs of the Championship.”

And although on the surface this could be seen as simply an opportunity for Corberan to big up one of his star players, it feels as though there might be an underlying message within the comments.

West Brom to offer Darnell Furlong a new contract at The Hawthorns?

Furlong is one of several first-team stars out of contract at West Brom next summer, with Jayson Molumby, Grady Diangana and John Swift’s deals all also set to expire.

If the Baggies are wise, they will already be lining up a new deal for Furlong after what Corberan said.

The manager’s suggestion that he wants the club to “value” Furlong could imply that he wants fresh terms offered to the defender.

Corberan has been a revelation at The Hawthorns, and Shilen Patel should make sure he does everything in his power to keep hold of the manager, which means keeping him happy.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise to a brand-new contract offer made to Furlong in the coming months.

In other West Brom news, Mikey Johnston has admitted to being “disrespectful” about an ex-Baggies Premier League star.
