Carlos Corberan reveals best position for ‘intelligent’ West Brom utility ace Callum Styles

Carlos Corberan believes utility ace Callum Styles is best suited to playing as an attacking left-back for left-winger for West Brom.

The Spanish coach brought in the Hungary international from Barnsley in the summer and made his debut off the bench in the 1-0 win over Swansea prior to the international break.

Baggies fans can probably expect to see more of him moving forward, with Baggies boss Corberban hailing the 24-year-old’s ability to be an “intelligent” influence from several positions.

The Baggies boss said in quotes reported by the Express & Star (12 September): “I think he is a good intelligent midfielder, a good intelligent left wing-back, a good intelligent winger.

“He is one of these players that has the game understanding and the desire. You don’t find many of these players.

“Probably one of his strengths is his versatility, you don’t know his main position because he can play so many.

“If you ask me where I see him more in the squad? I see him more as an attacking left-back or attacking left winger, even if I consider he can play as a midfielder.”

Callum Styles will come in handy for West Brom

Baggies fans will be delighted with the start made by the club to the Championship season, with three wins and a draw in the first four matches.

The Baggie sit second in the table having rebounded well in the early stages of the campaign following play-off semi-final heartbreak last term.

Although Styles has only made one appearance so far, playing just eight minutes in the Swansea victory, the former Sunderland man will play a key role in Corberan’s side, if he can remain injury-free.

His ability to play in numerous positions gives the Spaniard options in many scenarios, and he could be used as an attacking player as well as replacing providing competition for popular new boy Torbjorn Heggem.

It is still very early doors in the campaign, of course, and Sunday’s trip to Portsmouth promises to be a tough encounter against a Pompey side who have competed well without getting that first victory thus far.

But Albion fans have every right to be optimistic and hopefully Styles can play a big part in what will hopefully be a big season for the Baggies.
