Corberan shares ‘challenging’ transfer admission at West Brom

Carlos Corberan admits it was a “challenging” summer in terms of squad turnaround after a hectic transfer window for West Brom.

In quotes reported by the Express & Star (13 September), the Spanish coach admits the Baggies have had to “adapt” since their Championship play-off loss to Southampton.

Albion brought in 11 players during the summer window (albeit one was the return of Mikey Johnston) but despite all the new faces have gained 10 points out of a possible 12 in the Championship so far.

Corberan said: “We had a very big challenge in front of us in the market. We had many exits. We were talking about the players in the semi-final. 13 players involved are not at the club or now 12 (with Johnston),” he continued.

“It shows how challenging the market has been for us. A market with a lot of financial restrictions which means we had to use the market in different situations.

“We have 20 pitch players, you always want two in each position. It has been challenging for us but in the end we will complete the gaps.

“The level of players will tell you the level of the team you will have. We have new players that still need to adapt, some new players have shown adaptation.”

Squad depth is key for West Brom promotion hopes

The Championship is a grueling division, with 46 matches to be played, and the 41-year-old is aware of the strength his squad needs to reach the Premier League.

With the late deals for Johnston and Mason Holgate, Corberan believes he has been able to fill in the gaps.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s move to Coventry City made space for Johnston to join the Baggies, while Holgate was available on loan.

The Albion boss has started each of the last four Championship matches with the same 11 players, but that could change in the next match against Portsmouth.

West Brom will be eager to pick up where they left off before the international break, and the latest additions to the squad will be beneficial in their push for promotion.

And while it might be a challenge integrating so many new faces, one thing Corberan has always proven at The Hawthorns is that he is not scared of a challenge.
