Sky Sports commentator reacts to ‘devastating’ West Brom moment v Portsmouth – watch now

Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse hailed “devastating” Josh Maja after his strike during the West Brom v Portsmouth game.

The Baggies led Portsmouth 1-0 at half-time in their Championship clash at Fratton Park on Sunday (15 September) through Maja’s early goal.

Thanks to a near-perfect strike from Maja inside a minute, Carlos Corberan’s men have found themselves ahead in what has otherwise been a fairly end-to-end game.

Speaking on the striker’s finish live on Sky Sports [15 September, 15:02], Taphouse also shared his praises for another West Brom ace during the build-up.

“What an incredible start for West Bromwich Albion. Tom Fellows the architect as he has been so many times already this season,” Taphouse said.

“Josh Maja makes it five in five with a devastating finish”.

Josh Maja has been the West Brom saviour this season

After coming off the back of a fairly successful 2023/24 season that saw the Baggies find their way to the playoffs, Corberan’s men haven’t yet taken their foot off the gas.

The fact that the club flying high in the Championship table shows how far the Spaniard has brought the team on since his arrival.

Maja has been integral to the club’s success this term and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down yet either.

Mikey Johnston was brought in permanently during the summer transfer window after a strong end to his campaign last season but hasn’t yet managed to start a game due to the run of form the Nigeria international finds himself in.

If the 25-year-old can keep up his current form, it’s hard to see how the Baggies would drop out of the Premier League promotion race come the end of the season, even if only five domestic games have been played.

In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan has been hailed for the work he’s done at the club.
