West Brom in hunt to sign free agent Piers Hatcliff after he quit Southend United
West Brom are interested in a deal to sign free agent winger Piers Hatcliff, according to The Sun on Sunday.
On page 55 of their print edition on 15 September, it was reported that a pursuit is ongoing to bring the former Southend United Under-18s man to The Hawthorns.
Hatcliff is without a club after leaving the Shrimpers, and has attracted the attention of several EFL clubs including Albion.
Barnsley are also understood to hold an interest, but Carlos Corberan’s side could offer him a “better route to the top”.
West Brom chase young talent
West Brom are flying in the Championship and have the chance to shoot to the top of the league this Sunday afternoon, but are also keeping one eye on youth.
The new era of young players in the squad is emerging at The Hawthorns after the summer departure of many of Carlos Corberan’s old guard.
If the Baggies were to capture Hatcliff, it would signify other long-term investment in a young prospect similar to that of Done-German Ranger, who was signed last week following a trial period having left West Ham United [WBA official website, 4 September].

Former Burnley youngster Michael Parker has also signed in the West Midlands, as has New Zealand Under-20 goalkeeper Joe Wallis.
There is a hope that there will soon be the next talent to shine through in the first team as is being seen with Tom Fellows this season.
