Alex Palmer blasted for what he was seen doing to West Brom team-mates v Portsmouth
BBC reporter Steve Hermon believes Alex Palmer was “hypocritical” to tell his West Brom teammates to calm down in their win versus Portsmouth.
The Baggies took all three points from Sunday’s (15 September) contest and find themselves at the top of the Championship table after a stellar start to the season.
Goals from Alex Mowatt and Josh Maja were what helped Carlos Corberan’s men get all three points and the club look to be on course to get playoff football once again at the very least.
Albion looked nervy while a goal ahead, with Palmer guilty of putting his colleagues under pressure at the back, but he was quick to blast orders to those same players.
Speaking live on BBC Radio WM (15 September, 15:19) Hermon shared his verdict on Palmer after what he saw him do during the game.
“Excellent defending and perhaps a goal-saving challenge there from [Darnell] Furlong. That was absolutely superb,” he said. “Two vital blocks from Furlong and then [Kyle] Bartley inside the six-yard box.
“Alex Palmer then grabs the ball and says calm down, which is a bit hypocritical as he was the one who started the chaos.
“Bartley is shouting at Palmer and [Jayson] Molumby, saying ‘what are you doing?’.”

The 2024/25 season has been one where Corberan’s men have come into their stride and have exceeded the expectations of many.
Granted, they were expected to be fighting for the playoff places once again but nobody anticipated the club to be as dominant as they have been.

They even managed to take some points from their game against Leeds United, where they drew 0-0 with the West Yorkshire outfit.
Palmer has played a massive part in this superb start to the campaign, even producing one save of note against Portsmouth.
There was the one shaky moment in the first half, but it ultimately mattered little and Albion eased to three more points on the South Coast.
Joe Wildsmith joined in the summer transfer window, but it will take an awful lot to dislodge Palmer, who remains Carlos Corberan’s undisputed first choice.
