Portsmouth v West Brom incident leaves fans stunned – ‘Harsh’, ‘Criminal’

Supporters were left frustrated after West Brom striker Josh Maja was denied a second goal against Portsmouth as goal-line technology ruled his effort hadn’t gone in.

The 25-year-old scored early on at Fratton Park to help the Baggies on their way to an eventual 3-0 win on Sunday (15 September).

Despite being pleased with the result, many of those watching on were left baffled after the Nigerian had an effort deemed not to be over the line by just millimetres.

Fans react to Portsmouth v West Brom goal-line incident

Sky Sports Football shared footage of the Goal Decision System on X [15 September] to show that the ball hadn’t completely crossed the line before Will Norris’ save.

One fan described this as being “actually criminal” while suggesting that “the game’s gone” in response to the goal not being given.

Another just simply described the decision as “harsh”.

It has to be said that this decision was correct by the letter of the law, which means any complaints from the Baggies – and other neutral supporters – count for little.

In the end, this decision didn’t have an effect on the game as Maja and a brace from Alex Mowatt were enough to secure all three points.

The Baggies will now prepare for a clash at The Hawthorns against Plymouth Argyle where they will look to keep up their superb start to the campaign.
