Carlos Corberan gamble backfires as West Brom injury blow emerges v Plymouth Argyle

Carlos Corberan has revealed that Jayson Molumby is a doubt for West Brom for the match against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday [21 September].

The 25-year-old had been nursing a calf issue heading into the 3-0 win against Portsmouth at Fratton Park but played through the pain, although he has since been unable to train this week.

As reported by the Express & Star [19 September], the Albion midfielder is facing a race against time to be declared fit for the match against Plymouth on the weekend.

Corberan said at his pre-match news conference: “Molumby still didn’t recover well from the calf perspective – he was playing with some problem during the [Portsmouth] game.

“During training he couldn’t make a normal week, so let’s say he’s a doubt. We have to see how he reacts in the last days to see if he can be involved or he can’t.

West Brom pay the price for Jayson Molumby risk

The Albion midfielder has started all five Championship fixtures for West Brom this season alongside Alex Mowatt, who scored a brace on the weekend and looks set to miss his first match against Plymouth.

Corberan is blessed with options in the middle of the park, and it seems to be an avoidable error on the Spaniard’s behalf to select Molumby against Portsmouth with the knowledge he was carrying a knock.

While summer signing Uros Racic is afforded the required time to allow the Serbian to get up to match fitness, John Swift and Ousmane Diakite are available options to share the load with Molumby in midfield.

After a run of four wins and one draw in five matches for the Baggies, it makes sense that Corberan would want to stick with the same lineup that has led his team on this fantastic start to the season but that is also more reason that the boss must protect his regular starters.

The Championship schedule can be cruel and West Brom will need to rely on all squad members to put a shift in and share the minutes throughout the season to realise their automatic promotion aspirations.

A game at The Hawthorns against sixteenth-placed Plymouth is as good an opportunity as any for the boss to give his star players some much-needed respite.
