“I got involved in a little bit of digging; most touches, most tackles, 93 per cent pass success rate, most interceptions.

“This geezer was a monster at Fratton Park.”

Mowatt was instrumental for the Albion last term in helping his side reach the Championship playoffs and he has picked up where he left off this season in the heart of the midfield.

West Brom are looking like genuine title contenders this season and are one of three unbeaten sides alongside Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United having stolen an early march on Leeds United by opening a five point gap to their promotion rivals.

Mowatt extended his stay with the Baggies until 2026 over the summer, and the investment is returning in dividends with Carlos Corberan’s side sitting at the top of the Championship table after five matches.

The Spaniard will lean on all his squad players throughout the season to navigate the gruelling second-tier schedule, but the boss can rest easy knowing his midfield is safe in the hands of Mowatt.
