Carlos Corberan to do ‘magnificent’ job if he quits West Brom as £2m exit news emerges
Carlos Corberan would do a “magnificent” job at a new club if he leaves West Brom in the near future, according to Carlton Palmer.
The Spaniard is understood to have a release clause of £2million in his current contract at The Hawthorns [Football Insider], where he has continued to perform excellently as he steers his side to the top of the Championship table.
Leicester City, Burnley and former club Leeds United have all been linked with Corberan during this calendar year, but the 41-year-old signed his new deal back in February.
Former Albion midfielder Palmer told Football League World [19 September]: “I think [£2m] is a very low release clause for someone of his ability given what he did last season in getting West Brom into the play-offs.
“Of course, clubs are going to be looking at Corberan and think that, given what he’s done at Huddersfield and West Brom with the financial restraints, he could do a magnificent job if we give him the tools, and they’re absolutely correct.
“If he believes he can get promoted and things are good, then obviously he won’t look anywhere else.”
West Brom must keep hold of Carlos Corberan
The message is crystal clear – the Baggies must keep their boss at any cost this season.
That is not to say a future replacement for Corberan would fail at The Hawthorns, but more the risk of the managerial transition phase costing the club a fair few league points due to what would be destruction of the momentum of their season.
Corberan is a young, pragmatic and very impressive in-game coach with scary potential, which is why his managerial career so far has rapidly risen, and why Premier League clubs have taken a firm interest.
His frustration at the club’s inability to operate effectively enough for much of the transfer window was apparent in the summer, putting fans on the back foot with concern.

But one thing he has absolutely executed is to get the best out of his squad in the opening stage of the season – right now, it looks as if no one in the Championship is beating his Albion outfit.
The release clause purported to be in his deal is one riddled with risk, and could potentially force Shilen Patel’s hand in offering him a second improved contract of 2024.
