West Brom boss Corberan wanted by Southampton as Russell Martin development emerges

Carlos Corberan is being tracked by Southampton after his flying start to the season with West Brom, according to the Sunday Mirror.

As reported on page 72 of their print edition this Sunday [22 September], Darren Witcoop claimed that with his number of suitors rising, the Premier League Saints could consider Corberan, 41, as their next boss after Russell Martin’s slow, “one-dimensional” start to the season.

Dubbed one of the “hottest properties outside the top flight”, Corberan’s suggested £2million release clause has appeared to spike the attention of several clubs who believe they have a realistic shot of landing the Spaniard.

Leeds United – where Corberan remains highly regarded after his stint as Marcelo Bielsa’s right-hand man – have also been linked.

West Brom must throw everything possible at Carlos Corberan

With great form, promise and pragmatism as a coach comes the inevitable links to glamorous jobs – that is what West Brom are dealing with as a double-edged sword to their fantastic form.

Corberan has overcome losing a clutch of his experienced dressing room heads to steer Albion top of the Championship, with struggling Premier League sides such as Leicester City [Daily Mail, 24 May] and now Southampton keeping tabs.

Whilst Corberan’s deal with the Baggies runs until 2027, the reported release clause throws a spanner in the works – with the glitz of the top flight enabling the Saints of the world to make an investment on a head coach they may believe could take them higher. A lucrative new contract at The Hawthorns would be the only immediate solution.

Elsewhere, to lose their prized leader to the Premier League would be gutting; to watch him leave for another Championship promotion rival would be beyond the pale, as the threat of Leeds doesn’t quite fully evaporate.

For now, the Whites’ hierarchy seem content with Daniel Farke having made the decision to keep him following their failed promotion bid last term, but the fast-changing nature of football could see that redundant within weeks if form becomes inconsistent.
