Gabby Agbonlahor wowed by West Brom in new word of warning

Gabby Agbonlahor believes there is still a “long way to go” but has been left impressed as West Brom top the Championship table.

The Baggies have claimed 16 points from their opening six matches of the 2024/25 league campaign, sitting atop the Championship table, one point above high-flying Sunderland.

Carlos Corberan has been lauded for his work at The Hawthorns, especially after reaching the play-offs last season, but fans have been warned against getting too far ahead of themselves just yet.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (23 September, 6.54am), Agbonlahor said: “Before the season started for West Brom, there was a lot of worry about their financial problems and the players they had to sell.

“To start off the season they have, they must be given a lot of credit. But as you [Jeff Stelling] said, there’s a long way to go.”

Given Agbonlahor’s links to Aston Villa, it could be a surprise to see him so positive about the Baggies’ season so far, but it is difficult to deny their success.

The Baggies have only dropped points in a 0-0 draw against Leeds United, seeing them take 16 from a possible 18, and can now have full focus on the league after being knocked out of the EFL Cup.

Promotion to the Premier League is, of course, the main hope for all clubs in the Championship, and if Corberan continues this current trend, they may not even have to worry about the play-offs this time.

With 40 matches still remaining, the Baggies will not want to get too far ahead of themselves, but the early signs are extremely positive after five wins in six games.

West Brom still have the likes of Luton Town, Burnley, Norwich City, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Watford to prove themselves against before the turn of the year, which will provide the needed context to understand how they will fare this season.

Bring it on.
