West Brom want to sign English club’s Player of the Year in the January transfer window

West Brom are eyeing a move to sign Lincoln City’s Ethan Erhahon ahead of the January transfer window, TBR Football reports.

According to the outlet’s website on 27 September the Baggies are interested in the Scottish midfielder in the winter market as interest grows around the Imps’ reigning Player of the Year.

Three Championship rivals are also circling with Hull City, Burnley and Norwich said to be interested alongside Carlos Corberan’s league leaders.

And Lincoln boss Michael Skubala reportedly accepts his League One side will “struggle” to keep hold of the 23-year-old as clubs in the division above take notice.

Corberan has the Albion thriving so far after another transfer window of operating on shoestring, although the situation should ease the longer Shilen Patel has to address the financial issues which were built up under predecessor Guochuan Lai.

Under recent circumstances the club have been obliged to scour the lower leagues for signings, and have had success with the likes of Brandon Thomas-Asante, but with Erhahon it doesn’t look like they are alone.

The Scotland Under-21 international made 50 total appearances for Lincoln last term in his first full season after moving from St Mirren and is seemingly now closing in on making a step up the pyramid.

West Brom lost Okay Yokuslu in the summer to Trabzonspor and also saw the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah and Yann M’Vila leave, but the arrivals of Uros Racic and Ousamen Diakite, on a loan and a free transfer respectively, have helped bolster the midfield group behind Jayson Molumby and key man Alex Mowatt.

So defensive midfield is arguably not a priority if there finances were to remain tight in the New Year, but it looks like the Albion and others believe Erhahon could be a valuable long-term investment.

Corberan is attracting attention again from clubs who may be in need of a new manager soon but isn’t expected to go anywhere as his commitment to the project at The Hawthorns isn’t thought to be in doubt [WBA Report, 22 September].

And if the Spaniard keeps up his current work there is good reason to believe Erhahon might be swayed by the chance to play for him if the Baggies make an offer in January, especially with Racic set to return to Sassuolo at the end of the season.
