Ousmane Diakite struggles in 3/10 display – West Brom player ratings v Sheffield Wednesday
Carlos Corberan will be extremely frustrated as West Brom suffered their first league defeat of the season against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (28 September).
The Owls opened the scoring as Darnell Furlong was on the wrong side of an own goal, with Josh Windass doubling their lead just 14 minutes later in a slow start at Hillsborough.
Josh Maja and Alex Mowatt looked to have completed a late turnaround, with the latter scoring with six minutes remaining, but Anthony Musaba crushed the Baggies’ dreams just two minutes later to make it 3-2.
West Brom News rated each player out of 10.
Alex Palmer – 7
Could do absolutely nothing about Sheffield Wednesday’s two goals in the first half. Made several key saves after to keep his side in the game, which could have been vital had the Baggies secured the draw.
Darnell Furlong – 4
Unlucky with his own goal but certainly could have closed the opposition down much quicker to avoid the situation. Struggled to deal with Wednesday’s attack.
Semi Ajayi (Off for Gianluca Frabotta 82′) – 5
Was caught out multiple times, especially with Windass’ lobbed goal over Palmer. Pace was his enemy but controlled his box well when Wednesday threatened the Baggies’ penalty area.
Kyle Bartley – 6
Cool, calm and collected in defence, even despite the two early goals conceded. Never looked flustered but frustrations set in as the Baggies failed to complete the turnaround at Hillsborough.
Torbjoern Heggem – 5
Showed good promise flying down the left flank, attempting to help Karlan Grant. His defensive work was not as impressive, though, especially as Windass got in behind to score a second for Wednesday.
Uros Racic (Off for Grady Giangana 60′) – 5
With Jayson Molumby and Mowatt benched, Racic was given another chance to impress but was too hasty in midfield, picking up a needless yellow card and being hooked after an hour.
Ousmane Diakite (Off for Alex Mowatt 46′) – 3
Really struggled on his first start for the Baggies. Far too eager to impress, being second to every ball and forcing Corberan into a half-time change with his team down by two goals.
Grady Diangana nearly saves the day for West Brom
Tom Fellows (Off for Jed Wallace 76′) – 5
Like his teammates, Fellows struggled to get involved in the first half as Danny Rohl’s men largely dominated the key chances. Has a lot of potential but not his finest match in a West Brom shirt.
John Swift – 7
Got heavily involved in the middle of the park, attempting to keep control of possession and push the Baggies forward. Made several chances for his teammates but final ball was lacking.

Karlan Grant (Off for Mikey Johnston 60′) – 5
Showed sparks of talent down the left flank but, ultimately, was far too quiet as Corberan’s men failed to get going until the substitutes came on at the hour mark.
Josh Maja – 6
Very quiet in the first half, rarely seeing the ball, but popped up when it mattered most to poke home. The goal piled pressure on Wednesday for the final 25 minutes of the game.
Substitutes
Alex Mowatt (On for Diakite 46′) – 7
Looked to have salvaged a point at Hillsborough before Wednesday hit back two minutes later, stealing all three points from the clash.
Grady Diangana (On for Racic 60′) – 8
Incredible substitute performance to help the Baggies back into the game at 2-0 down. Knew exactly what was needed of him and delivered in the final third.
Mikey Johnston (On for Grant 60′) – 4
Involved in some tussles on the flank but was unable to get involved as much as Corberan would have hoped.
Jed Wallace (On for Fellows 76′) – N/A
Gianluca Frabotta (On for Ajayi 82′) – N/A
In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan will be buzzing as a Caleb Taylor decision pays off away from The Hawthorns.
