West Brom make ‘smart’ Carlos Corberan exit decision amid Everton developments

West Brom have completed a piece of “smart business” by including a buyout clause in Carlos Corberan’s contract, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Reports suggest that while the Baggies boss is in no rush to exit The Hawthorns, Albion have included a release clause in his deal understood to be in the region of around £4million [DOOD, 22 September].

The Albion manager has caught the eye of Everton [The Express, 31 August] and while it remains unclear if the Toffees would pay his exit clause, Plumley insists £4million would be a good fee for a Championship manager

“I think it’s probably less unusual than people might think,” Plumley exclusively told West Brom News.

“You’re always kind of looking for the actual number and it is normally very difficult as a lot of these things are usually shrouded in secrecy for good reasons.

“As an example, there was an unconfirmed rumour a few years ago that Newcastle paid around £6million to take Steve Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday.

“We know that in the Premier League, manager compensations can easily run into the low tens of millions so in a ballpark range it is kind of there or thereabouts.

“Of course, there are a couple of factors within that. One is how much West Brom value that manager to insert a clause like that and the other is if you’re looking to take that manager, are you prepared to pay that clause?

“It is certainly something we’re seeing more of and will probably see even more of in the future and it is smart business in many ways from West Brom to put those clauses in, because not everyone has them.

“It’s probably in and around the range we’d be expecting for a good manager at a high-profile Championship club.”

Will Carlos Corberan exit West Brom amid rumours at The Hawthorns?

While no West Brom fans will be keen to see Corberan depart this season, particularly after Albion’s impressive start, a £4million compensation fee would certainly soften the blow in some way.

Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that and the 41-year-old will remain at The Hawthorns for the remainder of this season at least, but the Baggies have at least covered their backs with the buyout clause.
