West Brom rue Josh Windass transfer decision after what he did for Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom will rue failing to sign Josh Windass this summer after he scored in the 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Baggies lost their first Championship game of the season at Hillsborough on Saturday [28 September] with Windass scoring the second with a looping header.

Josh Maja scored his seventh league goal of the season to half the deficit with Alex Mowatt levelling the tie in the final 10 minutes from the bench. The West Brom celebrations didn’t last long as Anthony Musaba delivered the final blow two minutes later.

Joe Crann, a journalist for The Star, reacted to the goal on his X account and believes West Brom will now regret their summer failure.

He said: “West Brom wanted to sign Josh Windass in the summer when he was about to become a free agent – that sort of goal is exactly the reason why.

“Such great technique to cushion that header over the goalkeeper.”

Josh Windass transfer call comes back to haunt West Brom

At the moment, Baggies supporters may feel the club missed a trick by not signing Windass, but one goal doesn’t change the fantastic business conducted over the summer.

Mikey Johnston returning to The Hawthorns permanently after his loan move last season was by far the smarter decision, the 25-year-old will surely prove to be the better of the two forwards at the end of the campaign.

With Tom Fellows excelling on the opposite flank and John Swift behind the striker, the attack is arguably the best in the Championship this year [David Prutton] with Maja scoring his seventh league goal in as many games in the defeat.

However, the English second tier is an unpredictable league, and the unbeaten record at West Brom was bound to end at some point this season.

The defeat, against an opponent in which they were heavy favourites, will sting, Wednesday have scored more goals in one match than Albion have conceded all season. It simply boils down to a bad day at the office.

While other results could see the club fall as far as fourth place, Corberan’s side are still well on pace with their promotion rivals.
