Carlos Corberan must promote West Brom U21s star Harry Whitwell after what he did
Carlos Corberan is in desperate need of midfield reinforcements after West Brom lost 3-2 to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (28 September).
Having given both Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby rests ahead of the clash at Hillsborough, Ousmane Diakite and Uros Racic partnered to form the base of the midfield.
That experiment clearly did not work out as well as hoped, with the Owls taking an early two-goal lead before Mowatt replaced Diakite at the half-time break.
One of the club’s academy stars could be the answer to Corberan’s lack of options – Harry Whitwell. It could be a huge risk throwing the 18-year-old into the squad, but it would only be good news for his development.
Whitwell has already made two senior appearances for the Baggies, playing and assisting in the FA Cup against Aldershot Town last term as well as featuring in the EFL Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town recently.
Harry Whitwell earns call-up to West Brom first team?
The 18-year-old has played a starring role in the Under-21s league campaign so far, scoring five goals in his last three Premier League 2 fixtures, helping the Baggies to seven points from a possible nine.
He was on the scoresheet once again as the youngsters faced Southampton in a 1-1 draw on Friday 27 September, seeing their unbeaten run in all competitions stretch to four matches.
Few academy players are impressing quite as much as Whitwell is, and it would hardly be a surprise if Corberan were to call him up to the senior squad soon.
Many clubs decide to bring their inexperienced youngsters through, such as Chris Rigg at Sunderland and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney.
All of them are performing in the Championship, and there is absolutely no reason why Whitwell could not achieve the same if Corberan were to give him a chance in the first team.
In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan will be buzzing as a Caleb Taylor decision pays off away from The Hawthorns.
