Torbjorn Heggem rewarded for fast start at West Brom as new announcement made
West Brom star Torbjorn Heggem’s form has seen him receive his maiden call-up for Norway ahead of the international break.
The Norwegian FA announced on their official X account (1 October) that Heggem is part of a 23-player squad selected to play in UEFA Nations League matches against Slovenia and Austria later this month.
Heggem, who signed for the Baggies from FK Brommapojkarna in the summer, has started all eight Championship matches for Carlos Corberan’s side so far this term, playing out of position at left-back.
Torbjorn Heggem Norway call-up reflects strong West Brom start
Heggem is far from the only Albion player whose stock has risen following an excellent start to the Championship campaign, but is the only new signing who has been an ever-present thus far.
The 25-year-old has taken like a duck to water in England’s second tier, even if he did disappointed against Middlesbrough last time out, despite not being utilised in his preferred role.
Norway have recognised the defender’s versatility at The Hawthorns, and with the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Leo Ostigard likely to be picked at centre-half, he could find a way into the side at left-back.
Semi Ajayi, Mikey Johnston and Jayson Molumby are also likely to be away during the international break, while Josh Maja’s red-hot form up front so far this season could result in a return to the Nigeria set-up.
At the crux of all these improvements is Corberan, though, and should his side get back to winning ways and start near the Championship’s summit, further international call-ups are surely on the way.
