West Brom chief Shilen Patel makes Championship admission – ‘I’ve given up’

West Brom chairman Shilen Patel admits he’s “given up” on trying to make Championship result predictions after seeing what’s happened this term.

The Baggies have had a strong start to their 2024/25 campaign and find themselves fourth in the table with 16 points, just two behind league leaders Sunderland.

Their unbeaten run came to an end after their recent losses against both Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, however, the Baggies are still well within reach of the automatic playoff spots at this early stage.

Speaking to The Telegraph (3 October), Patel shared his admiration of owning West Brom and what it means to him.

“In these early stages, I think it’s very important to be a part of what’s going on. It’s about knowing that over time the right things are in place,” he said.

“I’ve been to England nine times since February. It’s been a great adventure for the family.

“My kids have really enjoyed the experience. My wife has also been very supportive and had the opportunity to come here and experience what it means to the fans and community.

“One thing I’ve learned very quickly is that I’ve given up predicting results in the Championship.”

West Brom are flying in the Championship

While their last two second-tier games have resulted in losses, it feels as if these two results are just bumps in the road for what lies ahead.

The Baggies have been in stellar form for the vast majority of the season and seem to be one of the better teams in the Championship.

Granted, this isn’t down to just one reason but the fact that Carlos Corberan is still at the helm will no doubt have a lot to do with it.

West Brom’s next Championship game is on 5 October at The Hawthorns against Millwall and Corberan will no doubt be looking for his squad to turn things around and to start firing once again.

Of course, the likely absence of Grady Diangana will be a huge miss for the club, but, with Tom Fellows’ recent form alongside Josh Maja’s, the void left behind by the former West Ham United man can be filled fairly easily.

The Baggies will be looking for redemption this season after their failure to gain Premier League promotion last term and, if they can re-find their winning ways once again, there’s no reason why that can’t happen.
