Corberan explains change in approach under Patel as discussions on West Brom contracts begin
Carlos Corberan explained how there is a new long-term approach to planning under Shilen Patel with discussions over player contracts already beginning.
Corberan’s side have enjoyed a strong start to the season, sitting fourth in the Championship table and future-proofing the club can only be seen as a positive for the Baggies.
The club face many key decisions over the coming months with several important players in the last year of their contract but Baggies boss Corberan spoke about how the club are able to plan longer term since Patel’s completed takeover in February of this year.

Speaking to Express & Star, (8 October), Corberan said: “We always have meetings to update how we are seeing the squad, the players growing, it’s good to have these conversations. They know my opinion and we put our opinions in common.
“One of the considerations the club is doing is this, to start to work on not only the short-term but the medium to long-term. This is a big change to the past – something the club is doing.
“Some players want security, some players want risk, some players want to change, some want to stay. Some players hate to be in the last year of their contract and want to avoid this. Some players say they are in their last year so they want to be open to possibilities – everyone is different.”
West Brom need to keep their key players
Semi Ajayi and Grady Diangana are just two of the names who out of contract at the end of the season, two players who would arguably start for the majority of the sides in the Championship and certainly players that West Brom should be keeping hold of.
Other Albion regulars that find themselves out of contract include Jayson Molumby, Darnell Furlong and John Swift.
West Brom need a sense of long-term security for all involved; players, fans and the club itself and the new approach taken by Patel will certainly provide that.
This season is West Brom’s sixth in the Championship out of the last seven and, under Corberan, the Baggies have regularly contended at the top of the table.
Planning for the long term will hopefully yield results in the quest to return to the Premier League.
