Portsmouth to follow West Brom lead as Carlos Corberan exit clause emerges
Portsmouth have likely followed the example of West Brom and inserted a release clause into John Mousinho’s new contract, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Corberan’s deal at The Hawthorns is understood to include a buyout clause in the region of £4million [DOOD, 22 September], which has boosted the Baggies’ hopes of warding off potential interest from Premier League clubs.
While the exact details of Mousinho’s recent contract extension at Fratton Park haven’t been revealed, Plumley insists that most manager’s deals in the Championship will include some form of compensation clause.
“I think that’s likely,” Plumley exclusively told West Brom News.
“We’ve seen other examples of clubs doing this, haven’t we? We’ve spoken about the West Brom clause for Carlos Corberan at £4million.
“It’s likely nowadays that when managers are signing extensions, there’s probably some sort of release clause in there as well.
“I “think nowadays, it’s going to become more of the norm that if you see managers signing extensions or clubs are looking to pin managers down when their stock is rising, there’s probably some sort of compensation fee baked into that.
“My personal opinion on that is that it’s pretty smart to do that because you’re looking to protect the manager there for your club the best that you can.“

“It’s never foolproof because some clubs might pay the release clause, but it’s a good strategy to employ to keep a manager and keep some of that continuity when there has been growth in the football club over the last few years.”
Will Carlos Corberan exit The Hawthorns amid West Brom speculation?
West Brom’s contract decision has given them an excellent chance of keeping Corberan at The Hawthorns over the coming months, with several clubs believed to be keeping tabs on the Baggies boss [Sunday Mirror, 22 September, page 72].
Whether or not £4million will be enough to ward off the likes of Southampton or Everton remains to be seen, but the Albion boss doesn’t seem to be in any rush to jump ship at this stage.
