What Shilen Patel has said is music to the ears of West Brom fans – ex-Hawthorns star

Carlton Palmer has explained why West Brom supporters should be excited after Shilen Patel’s plan to get the Baggies back in the Premier League was revealed.

Patel acquired ownership of West Brom back in February 2024 and immediately signalled a change in approach that would help align Albion’s ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

Carlos Corberan’s side have started the season strongly, occupying fourth place in the Championship just two points behind league leaders Sunderland. However, Palmer belives it could be a difficult task to earn promotion this season but looks ahead eagerly to the future under Patel.

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: “It’s going to be difficult for them to get out of the league, given what’s in the league so far with the likes of Sheffield United, Leeds United and Burnley, who are very strong, and Luton Town who are struggling at the moment.

“It’s music to the West Bromwich Albion fans’ ears, listening to Shilen Patel saying that West Bromwich Albion belong in the Premier League.

“He’s intent on taking them to the next level. And, he’s not just talking about staying in, but thriving in the Premier League. That’s obviously music to the ears of supporters.”

West Brom can achieve promotion this season

Whilst Palmer stated it would be a ‘difficult’ task, it’s certainly a possible one and they’ve done themselves no harm in achieving that with the start they have made.

It’s perhaps no surprise to see West Brom where they are when taking into consideration they arguably have the best manager in the division but their strengths go much deeper than just Corberan.

The form of Josh Maja has been remarkable, with seven goals and an assist in nine appearances, he has been one of the standout players in the division and the longer he stays fit, the bigger the Baggies’ promotion hopes will be.

Patel demonstrated his intent for the club in the summer following the arrival of winger Mikey Johnston who joined for a reported £3m fee after an impressive loan spell last season.

If that ambition can be carried on into the January window, there is no reason West Brom can’t acquire some additional quality that would even further boost their promotion credentials.
