West Brom ratings so far this season: 3/10 Diakite a waste of money, 9/10 Maja magnificent

West Brom have endured a downturn in form in recent weeks but overall have enjoyed a relatively successful start to the campaign.

The Baggies have fallen from the top of the Championship table to fourth place, trailing league leaders Sunderland and Sheffield United by two points.

Carlos Corberan’s side have seen some standout performers step up this season, while some are yet to pull their weight in the promotion bid.

Here’s how West Brom News has rated each player’s performances so far this season.

West Brom player ratings

Alex Palmer – 7

Palmer has been a brick wall for the Baggies overall this season with only six goals conceded in nine Championship appearances. The Albion shot-stopper only conceded two goals in five outings before the 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, yet that is not to say he has been perfect.

Joe Wildsmith – N/A [one appearance]

Darnell Furlong – 7

Furlong has been ever-present for West Brom this term and his performances at right-back have helped solidify a solid defensive record.

Paddy McNair – N/A [one appearance]

Semi Ajayi – 7

Ajayi has been consistent for Albion throughout the campaign thus far, with his performances at centre-back solid to say the least.

Kyle Bartley – 7

Bartley has enjoyed a resurgence back into the Albion first-team frame this season and has rewarded Corberan with his faith, forming a formidable partnership with Ajayi in central defence.

Torbjorn Heggem – 8

The only Baggies player to record a goal contribution this season, Heggem has proved to be an astute signing with one assist in his nine league outings and has fit in seamlessly on the left of the backline.

Gianluca Frabotta – 5

The former Juventus full-back has struggled for fitness and game time at The Hawthorns this season but still has a role to play.

Reece Hall – N/A [one appearance]

Deago Nelson – N/A [one substitute appearance]

Iddrisa Dauda Amihere – N/A [one substitute appearance]

Alex Mowatt – 8

Mowatt has been sensational at the heart of the Albion midfield this season with three goals scored so far. The 29-year-old is setting the pace for his side, and has caught the eye of one pundit in particular.

John Swift – 6

The 29-year-old has been another regular starter for the Baggies this season but is yet to get off the mark with goal contributions. However, he has been a solid performer all-round.

Jayson Molumby – 7

With one goal in six appearances, Molumby has been somewhat overshadowed by his midfield partner Mowatt. However, the pair have formed an excellent partnership in the pivot and Molumby should get over his injury setbacks and kick on for the Baggies.

Callum Styles – 5

Styles is yet to show West Brom what he is capable of this season and has been unable to force his way into the first-team frame, with only two substitute appearances.

Uros Racic – 6

The Serbian has looked more than capable of challenging the status quo at West Brom. With one assist in three starts and three appearances off the bench, Racic will mount a challenge to Mowatt and Molumby this season.

Ousmane Diakite – 3

Diakite produced an abysmal performance against Sheffield Wednesday in his sole start for the Baggies and was rightfully hooked at half-time. The summer signing has looked frankly a waste of money so far this season and is firmly at the back of the pecking order in midfield.

Josh Maja running the show for West Brom this season

Tom Fellows – 8

Fellows has been one of the standout performers this season with five assists in eight starts for West Brom. The 21-year-old is enjoying a truly breakout campaign this term and will be an important figure in the race for Premier League promotion.

Fenton Heard – N/A [one appearance]

Harry Whitwell – N/A [one appearance]

Cole Deeming – N/A [one substitute appearance]

Grady Diangana – 5

Diangana has endured his fair share of injury concerns at The Hawthorns this season and faces a fight against Mikey Johnston for a starting berth on the flanks.

Karlan Grant – 6

Grant has enjoyed regular game time this season but with only one goal in eight starts, he will need to up his game to ensure he keeps his place in the side.

Josh Maja – 9

Maja has been the fairytale story of the season thus far with a magnificent seven goals and one assist in nine appearances. The Nigerian is establishing himself as one of the best forwards in the Championship, and Corberan will be counting on the 25-year-old to remain consistent throughout the campaign.

Jed Wallace – 4

Wallace has become a bit-part player for West Brom this season with seven of his eight appearances coming from the bench. The 30-year-old has failed to make an impact when given the opportunity and is likely to see his minutes limited throughout the year.

Mikey Johnston – 5

Johnston is yet to find his feet at The Hawthorns following his return from Celtic this summer. The forward has started once for Corberan this season but will surely re-establish himself with more minutes on the pitch.

Lewis Dobbin – 5

Dobbin has seen his playing time limited since his loan move from Aston Villa, with his eight cameos resulting in only 88 minutes on the pitch. The loanee has promise to make an impact this season but the early signs are not positive.

Devante Cole – 5

The summer signing impressed in his Carabao Cup outing in the 2-1 loss to Fleetwood Town, providing one assist. However, Cole has remained on the bench and will likely not feature in the starting lineup any time soon over the free-scoring Maja.

Eseosa Sule – N/A [one substitute appearance]
