Richard Keys makes embarrassing West Brom howler live on air

Richard Keys had a howler live on beIN Sports by claiming West Brom had beaten Oxford United on Saturday (19 October).

The Baggies came close to claiming the three points at the Kassam Stadium courtesy of Karlan Grant but were thwarted as Dane Scarlett rescued a 1-1 draw for the hosts with a 92nd-minute equaliser.

However, Keys was caught out by the late twist when speaking live on beIN Sports [19 October, 2:40pm] as he promptly congratulated Oxford after realising his error.

He said: “West Brom have gone top after winning today at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium.”

Moments later, as the highlights footage continued, Keys added: “Ah, I didn’t know this. They’re not top. It was 1-1 – well done Oxford.”

West Brom will rue missed chance to go top of the Championship

The Baggies have now failed to win their last four Championship outings, and this latest result will be a crushing blow for Carlos Corberan with his side heading into the match as heavy favourites against the recently-promoted side.

Corberan has been the cream of the crop in the second tier this season and while it is far too soon to raise the alarm bells at The Hawthorns, his side could have been top of the table had it not been for this downturn in form.

The Spaniard has moved away from his 100-per-cent serious approach this year in an attempt to better last season’s play-off semi-final defeat to Southampton.

Perhaps it is time to revert to type with the squad struggling to pull themselves out of the rut.

West Brom are still well on track in the Championship as they remain in strong play-off contention, but they must return to winning ways soon before the wheels well and truly fall off in the race for automatic promotion.

Corberan sent the supporters ecstatic with his revelation he would be “very, very happy” to extend his deal at The Hawthorns, but now is the time to prove he is truly worthy of an extended contract.
