West Brom boss Carlos Corberan reveals thoughts on international job

West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan has said he has not considered moving into international management, calling it a “different challenge”.

The Baggies boss, as quoted by the Express & Star [19 October], mulled over the factors separating club and national team coaching after England appointed former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.

Corberan is yet to experience any kind of involvement with a national team in his career, but admitted it would involve some “amazing experiences”.

The Spaniard said: “It is a different dynamic but I’ve never asked myself the question. It’s a different challenge. They have to be following games, following players, updating players, watching more games, training less.

“It is different but you live some amazing experiences, the possibility to represent your country, a top experience to do that at a high-level competition.

“But at the same time you probably miss something day-by-day, training and playing every week or three days.”

West Brom desperate to keep hold of Carlos Corberan

However long West Brom can hold onto Corberan as head coach depends on a multitude of factors, including potential promotion this season; finances available via Shilen Patel and league ruling; interest from elsewhere after a reported £2million release clause was revealed.

The certainty of the matter is a pragmatic and modern operator who is still just 41 boasts a high stock and is expected to have an illustrious career on the touchline.

International management would be a left-field pathway for Corberan to take anytime soon, but for himself as a Spaniard, to manage his country’s decorated national team has been an honour for some of the greatest Spanish coaches to grace the game.

With the Albion boss having not enjoyed too much of a playing career before his break into high-level coaching, the consideration of internationals could seem more appealing at some stage in the future.

But for now, his sole task is to launch the Baggies back into the Premier League, and there is currently no more suited individual to complete the mission at The Hawthorns.
