Don Goodman wowed by what Carlos Corberan did to West Brom wage bill
Carlos Corberan’s influence over squad management and transfer policies at West Brom has been “really impressive”, according to Don Goodman.
Speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports (19 October, 12:38pm), Goodman said despite the wage bill at The Hawthorns coming down by 30 per cent in the summer, Corberan now has better squad depth.
The likes of Matt Phillips, Cedric Kipre, Okay Yokuslu and Brandon Thomas-Asante all left the club, with Corberan bringing in 11 new first-team players.
Goodman said: “Talking about Carlos Corberan and West Brom’s rebuild, you’re saying he’s knocked 30 per cent off the wage bill.
“It’s really impressive because you do feel genuinely that this squad is probably a bit deeper, has a bit more depth to it than the one that reached the play-offs last season.”
Carlos Corberan rebuild the right move for West Brom
Despite the Baggies having failed to win any of their last four matches – including the 1-1 draw at Oxford United – their start to the season has still been impressive.
Although their goalscorer at the Kassam Stadium, Karlan Grant, is a long-serving player who has come in from the cold, there’s no denying that several of Corberan’s new signings have been hits thus far.

Torbjorn Heggem is yet to start a Championship match in his preferred position, yet his form as a makeshift left-back has still earned the 25-year-old a maiden call-up to the Norway national team.
Mikey Johnston’s return in a £3million permanent transfer from Celtic was one of the Championship’s headline signings this summer, and it’s only the form of Grant which is keeping him out of the starting XI.
Moving on big earners to bring in younger, hungrier players at a fraction of the price is paying dividends for Corberan, and Goodman will be keen to see his former side make the most of their new-look squad.
