West Brom January transfer plans emerge after financial developments at The Hawthorns
West Brom are unlikely to spend heavily in the January transfer window after recent developments at The Hawthorns, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
The Baggies were reportedly placed under an EFL business plan during the summer transfer window because of financial concerns, meaning any transfers had to be cleared by the football league [Sky Sports, 3 August].
Although it is unclear whether or not Albion will still be under that business plan in 2025, Plumley doesn’t expect Shilen Patel and Carlos Corberan to spend loads of money bolstering their ranks.
“Whether or not there is any embargo in place of how far the business plan stretches, we don’t quite know,” Plumley exclusively told West Brom News.
“But I think it is unlikely that we would see huge movement certainly in terms of incomings at West Brom in January, especially in terms of paying big fees.
“I think that’s still very much the case with new ownership coming in and it needs to kind of settle down a little bit before you can start to do that.
Are West Brom at risk of breaching FFP rules at The Hawthorns?
“We know the financial problems that the EFL have been working with the club on, as we’ve alluded to.
“You never say never in football, but I think the signs probably point to a relatively quiet window for the club, but that will depend on where they are in the league at that point in time, what their objectives are and where they want to get to.
“But I don’t see them spending huge amounts of money, but that’s not to say that’s a problem. I think that’s just a realisation of where the club is at the minute.

“They need to stabilise and they need to grow in the future.”
The Baggies currently sit fifth in the Championship table having secured 20 points from their opening 12 matches, with many pundits and supporters alike tipping Corberan’s side to secure a playoff position.
As they did in the summer window, Albion will find a way to get any crucial deals over the line when January rolls around, but it would be naive of fans to assume Corberan and his recruitment team will have millions waiting in the bank.
