Carlos Corberan has potential West Brom promotion ace up his sleeve as ‘Special’ O’Brien eyed

West Brom have been linked with a potential promotion-defining transfer of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

O’Brien’s name has done the rounds in recent days with West Brom rumoured to be a potential destination for the midfielder who could be reunited with Carlos Corberan.

The pair spent time with each other at Huddersfield Town where the Spaniard described O’Brien as “very special” during his breakthrough season. (Yorkshire Post, 2021).

If a reunion was to happen, it would significantly boost West Brom’s chances of promotion back to the Premier League.

Lewis O’Brien could be the difference for West Brom

Throughout his career, O’Brien has showcased his ability as a top-level Championship midfielder and his recent performances in the MLS have earned him interest from several English clubs. (TEAMtalk, 30 October).

While it is yet to be seen, West Brom may hold the upper hand due to the relationship he had with Corberan throughout his time at Huddersfield.

O’Brien made a remarkable 50 appearances for the Terriers under Corberan during the 21/22 season, which ultimately ended in disappointment when the club missed out on promotion to Nottingham Forest, who would end up signing the midfielder the summer after.

He has over 140 appearances at Championship level, most recently with Middlesborough where he played a crucial role in their 23/24 season.

O’Brien has a plethora of attributes that see him succeed and his eye for a pass is something that West Brom have been missing during their current winless run.

Other clubs such as Leeds United and Southampton have been linked with O’Brien but if the Baggies can pull it off, it would amplify their promotion chances massively.

In other West Brom news, the club needs a period of “rebuild” at The Hawthorns before they look to win promotion to the Premier League, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
