Carlos Corberan to request new striker at West Brom after latest Daryl Dike injury update

Carlos Corberan will be asking West Brom to sign a new striker in January following Daryl Dike’s latest setback, according to Carlton Palmer.

The Baggies manager confirmed that the 24-year-old has suffered a hamstring issue during training as he attempted to regain full fitness after his lengthy Achilles injury [Express and Star, 25 October].

Despite making only one league appearance last season, Josh Maja has been in fine form since returning to the squad, though Devante Cole has done little as a back-up for the striker.

Speaking via Football League World on Saturday (2 November), Palmer said: “The problem is that Corberan is looking to get the side back to the Premier League.

Now, he’s got to go to his bosses and say, ‘Listen, I need to get a striker in. I can’t rely on Dike to be fit. When he does come back, he’s picking up injuries. I need a striker that can score goals.'”

West Brom to enter January transfer market for new striker?

Fans would certainly not turn down the opportunity to sign a new striker at The Hawthorns, especially given the team’s torrid run of results recently, but it is not as simple as that.

The Baggies’ summer transfer window was a clear example of just how stark the club’s finances are, with Okay Yokuslu, Conor Townsend and Brandon Thomas-Asante departing for small fees.

Free agents could certainly be an avenue for the club and Corberan to explore, and they would not need to wait until the new window opens to bring one of them into the squad.

However, Corberan is a rather meticulous man so not anyone will do for the team, and the selection of free agents is unlikely to yield someone of a high enough quality for the Baggies.

The main worry will be if Maja suffers a new injury, having missed 23 matches in all competitions through injury last term, but he looks to be at the top of his game so far.
