West Brom named favourites for Lewis O’Brien signing as Carlos Corberan set to be backed
West Brom can consider themselves the “frontrunners” for the signature of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien, according to Carlton Palmer.
The former Baggies man spoke to Football League World on Saturday [2 November] and believes the time O’Brien and Carlos Corberan spent together at Huddersfield Town will give Albion the edge in the race.
O’Brien has been attracting significant interest due to his performances on loan at LAFC, with West Brom named among several sides interested in bringing the midfielder back to England [TEAMtalk].
Palmer said: “If they can beat the other clubs to the signature of O’Brien, then you would think that, given he has worked with Corberan before and done really well with him, that he would not necessarily favour a move to West Brom but that they would obviously be the frontrunners.
“They would be at the forefront for his signature, given his relationship with the manager and what has happened before.”
Carlos Corberan relationship could help West Brom get Lewis O’Brien
Corberan has fallen deep into a rut at The Hawthorns, Tahith Chong’s goal at Kenilworth Road on Friday [1 November] confirmed a seventh consecutive match without a win after the 1-1 draw against Luton Town.
Five of those matches have been draws, and the Baggies are crying out for a difference-maker on the pitch as they could end the weekend 10 points adrift of Sunderland at the top of the Championship.
O’Brien would add star quality to the midfield ranks, which could drastically turn around the side’s fortunes in the West Midlands.
The 26-year-old has accumulated over 140 appearances in the Championship and was integral to Huddersfield’s promotion push during the 2021/22 season under Corberan, subsequently leading to his big move to Nottingham Forest.

However, competition for the midfielder is set to be fierce with Southampton, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Hull City and Stoke City vying for his signature. Corberan must utilise his previous relationship with O’Brien to stand a chance of landing his man.
The Baggies are watching their automatic promotion aspirations slip away. If O’Brien can take them a step closer to achieving their Premier League dream, West Brom must pull out all the stops.
