West Brom ace Mikey Johnston wows Irish media in Finland win – ‘Livewire’, ‘Delightful’
West Brom ace Mikey Johnston was described as “delightful” and a “livewire” during the Republic of Ireland’s win against Finland on Thursday night.
The Baggies winger found his form for West Brom in their recent victory against Hull City and was able to carry that into the international break during his country’s Nations League victory on 14 November.
Johnston registered an assist in their 1-0 win, with Irish media raving about his performance.
One report from RTE reads: “Johnston was lively in the first half and any time Ireland work the ball to his feet the game, he is a real livewire. End product will be how he is judged and he delivered with ball onto the head of Ferguson for the match-winning goal.”
While Balls.ie stated: “Broke out of pressure superbly on the edge of his box in the opening ten minutes to set Ireland on the counter. Johnston possesses a skillset in tight situations that few others in this squad have.
“His trickery on the edge of the area and delightful cross were sublime to set up Ferguson’s opener.”
Mikey Johnston upturn in form is good news for West Brom
Johnston is a player who possesses immense quality but has been unable to showcase that on a consistent basis so far this season. In reality, his performances at large have been poor and West Brom have needed to see an improvement for several weeks.
Thankfully, that improvement appears to have arrived with the winger impressing against Hull for club and Finland for country.
His loan spell last season allowed Baggies’ fans to see exactly what type of player he is and his return to form will provide a major boost for Carlos Corberan’s side as they look to put their winless run behind them and use their momentum to stake a promotion claim.

While his performances have improved, Johnston needs to show consistency. In a side that have lacked creativity in several games, his influence will be crucial to any chances West Brom have of achieving a top-six finish.
In what will be a hectic period, Johnston will need to be in top form if West Brom are to finish the year on a high.
In other West Brom news, Don Goodman believes whatever decision the Baggies take on Everton-linked gem Tom Fellows in January will determine just how ambitious the club are.
