BBC journalist makes ‘crazy’ West Brom transfer claim after what he’s seen

Chris Lepkowski believes West Brom need to strengthen their attacking ranks in the January transfer window.

Josh Maja has led the Baggies’ attacking line for the vast majority of the season and has done a solid job for the most part.

Speaking on The Liquidator Podcast (17 November), BBC journalist Lepkowski shared why he thinks it’s “crazy” – yet necessary – that West Brom need to target strikers in January.

“I think a lot of [the transfer business in January] will be guided by what happens before then in terms of injuries, in terms or form,” he said.

“I think if you look at it right now, with the squad that we have right now you might have to look at strengthening up front.

“It sounds a crazy thing to say when you’ve got Dike coming back from injury, you’ve got Devante Cole in the background, but I still don’t think we have enough firepower.

“I think we might also possibly need to think about, depending on what happens with defenders, if this current trend of our centre-halves getting injured continues, we obviously might look at that”.

Why Carlos Corberan needs to bring in a striker at West Brom

Maja has been in mostly stellar form this term but when he went on his goal drought, West Brom lacked any sort of attacking prowess.

The fact that Tom Fellows’ form also wasn’t up to scratch didn’t likely help matters much either, but if the Baggies had another striker within their ranks who was a consistent goalscorer, they perhaps wouldn’t have fallen as far down in the table as they have done.

Indeed, as Lepkowski said, Dike is finally on his way back to first-team football but with his injury history, he’s hardly a reliable player for Corberan to fall back on if Maja isn’t performing.

With another striker within their ranks, things would be far better at The Hawthorns and could even bolster their chances of gaining Premier League promotion.

Only time will tell what West Brom will do but if fresh faces aren’t brought in, it could mark the end of their automatic promotion hopes.
