Josh Maja twist at West Brom as second LaLiga team eye big-money deal

Real Sociedad have joined Celta Vigo in the race to sign West Brom forward Josh Maja, Super Deporte reports.

According to the Spanish news outlet’s website [19 November], Real Sociedad have added the forward to their list of targets ahead of the January transfer window.

However, Celta Vigo are currently leading the race and are willing to match the Baggies’ £16 million valuation of the club’s top goalscorer.

Carlos Corberan facing a fight to hold on to Josh Maja at West Brom

West Brom already have one eye on the winter transfer market, with a decision to be made on loanee Caleb Taylor; however, Carlos Corberan would not have anticipated the growing interest in Maja.

The Nigerian international recently rediscovered his form in front of goal, following up on his opener in the 1-1 draw against Luton Town with the winner in the 2-1 victory against Hull City before the international break.

Maja not only ended his side’s eight-match winless run in the Championship, but his strike against Luton was his first goal in five outings after scoring seven goals in seven matches at the start of the season.

However, the interest from LaLiga could prove a serious cause for concern for Corberan, as the allure of top-flight football in a top European league could be too tempting for the forward to turn down.

Of course, Maja earned top-flight European experience during his time at Bordeaux. He joined the Baggies after his 16 goals failed to secure Ligue 1 promotion, but he could be eager to test himself again away from England.

Regardless, Corberan must retain his only proven goalscorer at the midway point of West Brom’s potential promotion-winning campaign.

Therefore, Albion should put any interest from LaLiga or other interested parties on the back-burner until the Baggies know where they will be playing their football next season.

If Maja is eager to leave The Hawthorns, though, then £16m would be a remarkable coup for the club.
