Leicester didn’t hire Carlos Corberan because of what he’s doing at West Brom
Don Goodman believes West Brom boss Carlos Corberan would have been just as much of a “gamble” as Ruud Van Nistelrooy at Leicester City.
Following the sacking of Steve Cooper at Leicester, Corberan was linked to the managerial role and was reportedly open to leaving The Hawthorns (Give Me Sport).
However, the Foxes appear to have decided on the appointment of Van Nistelrooy (Fabrizio Romano) and Goodman told West Brom News why he thinks they opted against Corberan.
Goodman said: “So Carlos, he’s done very well with very limited resources. But just as Ruud Van Nistelrooy would be a gamble, just as much as Carlos Corberan would be a gamble. You know, any new manager that they get in is going to be a gamble.
“I wonder how tactically different Carlos is from Steve Cooper. You know, in terms of Steve, he wanted to get his teams organized, hard to beat, hard to break down, hard to score against and to compete.
“Well, that’s Carlos Corberan’s DNA, isn’t it? So if you’re Leicester, are you really going to gamble on a Championship manager who has that DNA? I’m not so sure.”
Carlos Corberan key for West Brom
While the Baggies may not be in the best form, they are still very much within the promotion picture and that is a testament to the coaching ability of the Spaniard.
Corberan has been dealt a tough hand with injuries to several key players and has still been able to keep them in a playoff position.
A winless run halted a lot of progress made by the Baggies but their ability to largely remain unbeaten sprung its own positives.
There are very few teams in the Championship as well drilled as a Corberan side and without him, West Brom’s chances of promotion are minimal.

The very fact he will remain at the club does wonders for the club’s chances of a Premier League return and January may play a crucial role in helping them achieve it.
Celta Vigo have expressed interest in Josh Maja, but the incoming business will largely determine whether the Baggies can maintain their position in the top six of the Championship.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies may be forced to sell their key players in January.
