Why Leicester didn’t hire Carlos Corberan from West Brom

Leicester City chose to hire Ruud van Nistelrooy so they didn’t have to pay West Brom compensation for Carlos Corberan, according to Alex Crook.

Speaking on talkSPORT (28 November, 7:50am), Crook said that with Leicester closing in on appointing Van Nistelrooy, the Foxes won’t have to pay anything after the Dutchman left Manchester United.

Corberan had been heavily linked with making the step up to Premier League level with Leicester, but now looks set to stay put at The Hawthorns after Leicester opted against buying out his contract.

Crook said: “There is a compensation element here as well, because obviously Van Nistelrooy is a free agent – having left (Manchester) United, they don’t need to pay any compensation.

“They would have done, had they gone down the Carlos Corberan line, for example.”

Carlos Corberan update the best possible news for West Brom

Although reports had surfaced that Corberan was willing to head to the King Power Stadium mid-season, Albion fans the world over will be glad to see the Spaniard continue his progress at The Hawthorns.

It’s far from the first time that Leicester have touted Corberan as the man to fill a managerial vacancy, and they’re far from the only club to keep tabs on the 41-year-old across recent seasons.

While the Baggies are currently on a relatively barren run of just one win in 11 matches – eight of which have been drawn – Corberan’s stock remains sky-high after taking Albion to the play-offs last season.

They remain firmly in the promotion hunt after 17 games this time around, and in order to finish the job after last term’s semi-final defeat, Corberan remaining in post is absolutely paramount.

Albion fans will be delighted that Corberan looks set to stay put, but will also know that the pressure is on for the Spaniard to improve on last season’s fifth-placed finish.

In other West Brom news, Robert Earnshaw wasn’t happy with Corberan’s side after yet another goalless draw against Sunderland.
