Don Goodman blasts £16m West Brom transfer scenario as speculation emerges

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman has suggested that selling Josh Maja would demonstrate a lack of ambition for West Brom ahead of the January transfer window.

Earlier in November, reports emerged linking Josh Maja with a £16million move to Celta Vigo in the January transfer window (Super Deporte).

The striker has been a crucial part of the Baggies' side and Goodman has exclusively West Brom News it would be a negative move from the club.

He said: "Well, you've got to ask the question. The club is finally, after years, on a fairly stable financial footing. So then, why would you sell the player who has scored more than half your goals?

"It's 10 goals. They've struggled to score goals, and yet they would consider selling the person who scored 10 out of their 18 goals? It just doesn't make any logical sense to me, unless there is zero ambition at the football club.

"Because at the end of the day, you sell Josh Maja for £16m. In reality, you're going to have to pay more to get another one. So for me, unless the player's angling for a move and is desperate to leave and is causing problems internally, then it wouldn't be anything that I would entertain in the slightest."

West Brom must retain Josh Maja for a shot at promotion

The Baggies have had a solid season under Carlos Corberan, albeit somewhat overshadowed by a winless run that saw them lose some ground at the top of the table.

However, Maja has been at the forefront of those efforts, having entered double figures for goals before December. That is a remarkable tally for a striker in a side that have struggled in front of goal in general..

In a side that have lacked the cutting edge in several games, it simply would make no sense to then sell the one player key to ending that goal drought in Maja.

West Brom need to strengthen in January, not weaken, and to consider selling any of your key players midway through a season would be insanity.

Maja will undoubtedly prove to be pivotal in their push for a top-six finish in the Championship this campaign and they need to add extra quality around him, knowing that if he gets service, he will score the goals to win games.
